Tackle Boxes and Jewelry Boxes by Dave Hoover
|
Dave Hoover started his journey into collecting fishing tackle like so many of us. His interest sparked when he acquired his grandfather's tackle box in the 1950's. He became a more serious collector in 1978 and joined the NFLCC, later becoming a Life Member in 1984. Since that time, Dave has also become a Life Member of the FATC, and a member of the Midwest Decoy Collecting Club. In the 1980's he started producing tackle lists that were mailed out several times a year. Not only did the tackle lists provide a service to other collectors in aiding them to further their collections; they provided a humorous side to tackle collecting with his witticism. After many years of hard work put into the tackle lists, Dave became so busy that he had to stop producing them. He has since retired, but his love of tackle and decoys is still strong. He attends 5 to 6 shows per year now and has also attended 26 consecutive NFLCC Nationals , however , his passions have now turned to woodworking. Dave Hoover creates the most beautiful works of art with various types of wood that he has shipped in from around the world. He builds tackle boxes and jewelry boxes that are unlike anything you will ever see. The workmanship and attention to detail is indescribable with exquisite dovetail joints that add to the quality and durability. He carefully chooses his wood depending on the characteristics he wants to give each one of a kind box. Some of the boxes have divided trays that lift out with inlays that match the top. The use of heavy brass hinges, brass latches with a lock and key, and a fine leather handle on the tackle boxes further embellishes the design. The boxes require much time, skill, and patience, however, he spares no time or expense on these boxes. He is very skilled in how he blends the different types of wood to create the exact design he desires and enjoys experimenting with new joinery techniques and creations. Dave has been called the Oscar Peterson of boxes. Pictures do not even begin to do these boxes justice; they are truly beautiful heirlooms that will be passed for generations. We
at Angler's Attic had the pleasure of meeting Dave Hoover at the Lang's
Spring 2005 Auction. He is a wonderful gentleman who warms your heart
just upon meeting him. We have also been fortunate to purchase both
a tackle box and jewelry box which we plan to pass throughout our generations.
Once you hold his work in your hands you will truly experience the art
of a master craftsman; a man who can create magic with wood. Dave Hoover
has given so much to the tackle-collecting hobby throughout the years,
and now he also gives to the woodworking hobby with his beautiful works
of art. Click
